Description:

No interdorsal ridge. Body is slender and elongate with a heterocercal tail. Body is grayish-brown with a pale belly. Smaller shark with relatively pointed nose. Very long upper labial furrow (groove around the lips). Origin of second dorsal fin is behind of origin of anal fin. Adults may have white spots on sides.

70 cm (27 1/2 in)

Adults Distinguishing Characteristics:

Compared to other sharks in the area, this is only shark where the anal fin origin is before the second dorsal fin origin. Blacknose shark can be occasionally confused with Sharpnoses, but Blacknoses have dark snout tips.

Juveniles Distinguishing Characteristics:

Juveniles have distinct black edges on caudal and dorsal fins.

Range:

New Brunswick, Canada to Honduras

Habitat:

Common in estuaries, sounds, near the mouths of rivers, and in sandy surf zones.
